Provide message to user "Please install/update Java"

When the JFile applet is not working I either get nothing or a gray box. (I've been switching browsers and OS's and sometimes the applet does not show up).
Is there a way to test if the applet loaded successfully or not so I can provide information to users about what needs to be done? Or is there a property setting for this? Thanks.
